As everything in this blog, this entry is completelly irrelevant but is an attempt to explain the origins of this Wicker Woman thing.
For many many years of my internet life (read complete lack of real life) I wore the nickname SilkSatin...which is the name of a comics character I took as a homage to Will Eisner, its creator and, to me, simply the God of comic book artists.
I still have friends who call me Silk and have no idea what my real name is.
I had a lot of fun with that name... it even got me a real life husband!
But... seems like most folks have no clue about Will Eisner or his works, and your typical online pervs used to be all over me, thinking I was somehow, with such a nickname, advertising my lingerie preferences.
After I got married, it just wasn't cutting it for me anymore.
So I asked my oldest son to come up with a name for me. Something weird, uncomfortable and, preferably, with nothing sexy about it.
He came up with Wicker Woman. I fell in love with the sound of it. Adopted right away.
It wasn't but a few days after I got on moove as Wicker Woman, that I heard about the remake of The Wicker Man, a classic british horror movie, with Nicholas Cage as the leading character.
So I says to meself... let's google this, shall we?
I found out info about both versions of the moovie... and I also found out about the ancient druidic cult of tha Wicker Man, or in some cases also called The Burning Man.
According to Wilkipedia, the bunrning of a Wicker Man is part of a pagan ritual, commemorating Beltane.
In the ancient versions of this ritual, human sacrifices, sometimes voluntary, sometimes convicted criminals, prisioners of war and enemies, were placed inside the gigantic wicker structure, to be burned alive, as ilustrated in the sweet image below.
There is a famous modern version of this ritual, called the Burning Man Festival, that celebrates Indie art and lifestyle.
Personally I have no ties to paganism, and I am not linked to indie movements of any sort.
Yet I still like the tart sound of my new nick and I like the story behind it. So I invented my own Wicker Woman... much less cruel than my ancient pagan counterpart.
She represents my freedom, my resilience, stubbornes...Let her light my way, purify my thoughts, make me flexible as the wicker she is made of, and yet strong and larger than life...may she give me the strenght to overcome all crisis, and, just like her, to be reborn again and again, from my own ashes.
Ok that was too corny... but i am keeping it.
